Console
The initial concept for this
console arose from observing
one of the most traditional
methods used by workshops to
hollow out and lighten the inner
volumes of marble sinks or
other heavy objects. The technique
involves drilling a dense
array of closely spaced holes
with core drill bits, creating a
honeycomb structure within
the marble block. The remaining
thin marble webs between
the holes are then partially
removed by striking them with a
hammer—a violent yet precise
act of subtraction.
The sculptural results of this
process, visible only during
intermediate stages, are
typically erased in the final
product: workshops clean away
all traces, rendering these raw,
transient phases invisible.
With this console, I wanted to
freeze-frame one of these
pivotal moments, making the
marble’s hidden metamorphosis
legible to all.
